The first thing you notice is that this is not an action film. It's a classic by the movement master of the silent era, William Desmond Taylor. There is no action, no chase, no car chase. It's a romantic comedy.Tom Cruise (Jack Reacher) is a former cop who has been working on his own for years. A girl and her boyfriend are killed by a speeding tow truck. Reacher tracks the driver down and he's not interested in the case. For no apparent reason, the girl is dead. His superior now asks him to do some work. He'll go to a small town called Summerlee. Reacher is called Reacher because he doesn't have any identification except for a military ID. In Summerlee, he first meets a young woman named Amy (Alice Eve). She's a waitress at a diner and Reacher takes a fancy to her. But he's not interested in getting involved and heads back to the city. He's trying to forget about her.Amy is devastated and decides to follow him. Jack Reacher is a great character but the movie is hampered by the fact that we never really see where he comes from or how he's been living for years. We don't know much about his past life or how he got to Summerlee so we can't attach any importance to his experiences.
